We are off to a great start building our classroom community! This week we read the book, Mathew's Dream by Leo Lionni and talked about our hopes and dreams for first grade. First graders thought about what they want to learn or be better at this year. Our Hopes and Dreams will be hanging in our classroom throughout the year to remind us of our goals. We spent a lot of time this week getting to know one another. We have played many team building games including scavenger hunts to learn what we have in common with one another. In our classroom community we are also learning about our first grade routines: pack up, walking in the hallway, sitting on the rug, learning time, etc. First graders have been learning quick and remember a lot about these routines from Kindergarten class. We created our own 1-L class rules and worked together to illustrate them. First graders also generated thoughtful ideas of how they could each take care of our classroom as well as contrasting rules at home and rules at school.
The first two days were action packed. First graders learned a lot of routines this week. We did many activities to learn about one another and our classroom. Next week we will start our Star of the Day program. Please check your child's backpack to see the schedule and poster. It is a fun program and we can't wait to see all the posters!
I am sure that many of you have read the letter that the PTO sent out about Brookline teachers working without a contract. I want you to know that these changes will be difficult for me but are a necessary step. I also want you to know that I will continue to meet the needs of your child in the classroom: they are my priority. I hope that there will be a quick resolution and things will go back to normal. Unfortunately, this will be the last blog I will be able to send out until there is a fair contract put in place.
