In 1W, we have been spending a lot of time learning about healthy teeth! We began the unit by talking about everything students already know about teeth. They had an opportunity to think like dentists and use mirrors to take a closer look at their own teeth. After sketching their own teeth, we began to learn more about the different kinds of teeth and the different layers of a tooth. Students learned more about dental healthcare by practicing flossing and brushing teeth with models. Students connected this dental health to a science experiment with hard-boiled eggs and Coca-Cola. They quickly made connections between how the Coca-Cola changed the outer layer of the egg and how sugary treats might affect the layers of our teeth! Students used toothpaste and toothbrushes to return the egg to its original color. This experiment reminded us importance of brushing our own teeth. Students were encouraged to practice and keep track of their healthy teeth habits at home. Throughout the week, we read stories, engaged in activities, and had class discussions that helped us learn more about healthy teeth! The students had lots of fun with this unit and are now able to share with you lots of tooth facts!
