This week first graders started making their own tradition books! They are writing about their family history, different traditions done in their family, and special foods they make and eat with their family. They are working very hard and are excited to share them next week!
This week we learned about the geography of the United States and Massachusetts. Students loved coloring in their maps and learning about Massachustts state symbols!
First graders learned a new fun math game this week called Counters In A Cup! Partners would take turn hiding and guessing. Partners start with a set number of counters, and partner hides some counters under a cup while leaving the others out. Partner two then has to guess how many counters are hiding under the cup! This is a great game that could be played at home with lots of household materials, such as macaroni or buttons.
This was a big week in writing workshop! At the beginning of the week, we read the book "Night Of The Veggie Monster". First graders LOVE this book, so we started a list of 'craft moves' the author used, and the purpose behind these craft moves. For example, he uses action words to help create a movie in the readers mind! First graders are now reading books from authors they loved and learning new techniques they can include in their own writing.
First graders also chose one of their stories they are going to publish. They started an editing checklist and will keep working on edits next week!
