Douglas Florian is our featured poet of the month. We have been enjoying reading his poems everyday! Douglas was born and raised in NYC. He is an artist and a poet. 1-W students enjoy looking at his artwork with elements of collage, watercolor, and decoupage. Florian likes to look at nature and animals to get ideas for his poetry. He has fun with rhymes, humor, and wordplay. Sometimes his poems are super silly, which the students in 1W love.
This week we studied his artwork and created our own animal poems. Students added silly pictures and humor in their drawings. They used crayons to add great details. Students added funny parts to their pictures like fish with microphones and turtles wearing scarves. After they had fun drawing their pictures they were inspired to play with words and begin to write their very own poems.
