First graders have been recording their thinking in their math notebooks. Students have been practicing addition and subtraction games. Students are recording their addition and subtraction combinations in their notebooks. Students are working on learning to select their math choice: math by myself or math with someone. We are working on using math strategies to help us count on. Last week we focussed on counting on. When you add two numbers you start with the bigger number and then add on. We are also working on using tens frames and counters to help us visualize different ways to make combinations. First graders are forming visual images to represent numbers. Tens frames help students to see that 6 is 1 more than 5 and 4 less than 10. Once students can visualize the numbers on the tens frames they can form mental strategies to compose and decompose numbers.
