By now you may have heard that we are working cooperatively as a class to build community. Students have been working together to listen for the teachers chime. When the chime is sounded everyone stops, looks, and listen. With 22 students you can imagine this is a huge task and we have been working hard in 1-L. It can often be so hard to stop drawing or playing a game when the teacher announces clean up time. I find it is very beneficial to ring the chime and give a 3-5 minute warning till clean up.This allows students to finish what they were doing and put the last finishing touches on artwork or playing before clean up. The key to earning class stars has been to stop, look, and listen and then follow the teacher's directions. When the students do this cooperatively as a class we get a star. Last week we earned 20 stars and the students voted for extra recess. Now the students have voted once again and are working towards a pajama party with stuffed animal. As you can imagine the kids are really excited and motivated. It has been a really great motivating tool for the beginning of the year to work together as a class.
