During writing workshop we are talking about zooming in and writing about small moments. First graders are learning to think about a big idea and zoom into one specific detail and write all about that! We used a watermelon as an analogy - we think about the watermelon as the big topic and all the seeds as the small moments. We read the book, Night of the Veggie Monster by George McClements. This book is a great example about zooming into a small moments. The author wrote about one time when the little boy didn't like eating his peas at dinner. After reading this story, the first graders chose one story they previously wrote to zoom in. Teachers guided students to think about the moment to write about. We are asking students to think about one specific thing that happened and write a seed story. After teaching this mini-lesson first graders are doing a great job zooming in and adding details. For example, a student originally wrote about going to the zoo and after the lesson decided to zoom in and write about an exhibit where he saw jaguars.
