This week we learned about the penny and nickel. 1L students are very familiar with these coins as we use them every day to count the days of school. At home, your child may enjoy playing with coins. Simply empty out your change purse and let them sort and count the coins. You can help guide your child by asking, "What is this coin?" or "How much is this worth?" First graders are working on adding groups of pennies together. Students have also been working towards counting by 5's with nickels and adding on with pennies. Students are also making combinations that equal bigger coins. For example, ask your child to make equal amounts 25 pennies equal 1 quarter.
