The past few weeks we have been learning about our class pet turtle, Fenway. Students have been using observation and inquiry skills to ask new questions and learn new information. Right now we are having an ongoing study to learn about what foods Fenway likes. Fenway is an omnivore. He eats plants, worms, and some insects. During our study students have been offering Fenway different fruits and vegetables to try. Every day we observe and notice if the foods are gone. Then we are tracking this information on a big chart and in our science notebooks. Students have also been carefully observing his shell both the top and the bottom. I have been projecting photographs of different parts of the turtles body on the big screen for students to observe small details. Students have been recording their observations, questions, and evidence in their notebooks. The big question right now is: How old is Fenway? Is Fenway a boy or a girl? Some children learned that a boy has red eyes and they think based on this fact, he is a boy. We still have some more research to conduct to gain more evidence to make our claim. Check back in a few weeks.
